I know that snakes have special lenses over their eyes, but how do they sleep? Do they have more than one lense or do they just leave their eyes "open?"

Snakes don't have eyelids, can't close their eyes , don't "lick" their eyes & can sleep in bright light. I've captured many snakes basking in full sunlight, with no shade around. One of the few ways you can tell if a snake is sleeping or not is by watching their tongue. If it's flicking periodically, they;re awake, if it doesn't flick once & a while, the snake is most likely sleeping.

No!!! snakes do not have eyelids. They have to find a dark place to hide. And if they don't have one the don't sleep. It is very important to have some kind of hiding place for a snake. the only eyelid a snake has is not really an eyelid. It is a cloudy kind of blueish looking piece of skin that goes over the eye during the time when it sheds it skin. Depending on which kind of snake it is it depends on when they shed. For most snakes it is about twice a year. But there is no eyelid covering either of the eyes. The only way snakes sleep is when they find a dark hiding place.

Firstly let me say happy b-day, hope you have a wonderful day. Now the answer; No snakes do not close there eyes when they sleep, they have no eyelids. They do however have a ocular scale called the brille (eyecap - you can see it when your snake sheds). This brille offers some of the functions of the eyelid. It keeps the eyes moist, protects them etc. The brille is formed during the embrio stage when the upper and lower "eyelid" joins together. When the snake hatches its eyecap is fully formed and it goes through life without ever closing it's eyes.

I don't know, but they do sleep. People often get bit by picking up a sleeping snake-make sure the snake is awake and knows you are there before you pick it up. I nudge mine first if they are sleeping in a hide and let them look around a bit before I pick them up.

Most snakes can cover their eyes if they want - its more to protect them from the brush, weeds and thrashing of the prey they eat. they seem to get plenty of rest even the ones with their eyes wide open.

Im no snake expert but im pretty shure that they may have a certain layer to their eyes that we dont have. Like a protective coating. I do know the lick their eyes to keep them moist. So when they sleep they just leave them open.
