I'd stay with them till the end so they wouldn't feel lonely. Being alone when you're about to die is the worst thing, especially when your loved ones aren't there for you.
I'm staying for them, not for me.

I have been a caregiver to my mother, my father, my grandmother and my youngest brother, so I think I stay until the bitter end. In fact, I was with my brother when he died, and held my father's hand when he died. My mother was in a hospital in another town and I didn't make it in time and I was called from work when my grandmother died. All of them passed away from different illnesses. I used to be scared of dead people, but now it seems like a natural transition. It doesn't make it any less sucky, though!

I haven't had to deal with this yet. I am interested in seeing some of the answers. I think I would want to be there with the person. I missed my grandmother right before she died. I knew she was about to die soon, but I didn't know how soon. I was on my way to visit her and she had passed while I was still on the road. That made things even more upsetting then they already were.

I've had three ferrets die in my arms, less than a year apart. It was soooo hard to control myself, but I cuddled them to hopefully make them feel better, and not scared to die. It was horrible, and is now making me tear up. thank you...
As far as people, I watched my own father's health degenerate slowly. I had no choice but to look away. I had to go home, which was a good 900 miles away. My kids were a big help when that happened. They kept me laughing and smiling. I wish they would have had more than one time with him.
*sigh*

I am definitely someone who will stay with them to the very end, and if possible lay beside them and hold them ever so close.
I have done that and I will continue to do that and pray.~~~Jill
