Almost immediately after my kitchen was remodeled, I cracked my Corian type countertop by putting a crock pot on it. I didn't realize how fragile the top was or how hot the crock pot got underneath. I kept trying to get it fixed and the company who installed it won't even call me back even though I'm willing to pay. Is this even repairable? If not, should I file an insurance claim and get a new counter top or does insurance even pay for that kind of stuff?

You are the victim of a poorly installed countertop. Since you say it is a 'Corian type' I'm assuming it's a cheap knock-off and probably nothing more than a thin veneer of material over a wood/composite backing.

Contact your local office of consumer affairs and file a formal complaint. Find out exactly what type of solid surface material it is and contact the manufacturer. Dupont offers a lifetime warranty on the material but not on the installation. The manufacturer may know of a reputable installer in your area who may have some sympathy.

Good luck!

I think you could get some help from DuPont. They make Corian. Go to their website on the Internet by searching "DuPont Corian." You will find an 800 number there. If you have been swindled, they would be able to tell you. They could tell you also if the installation were performed properly. Perhaps it is too thin, or unevenly supported.

If you have anything in writing that this was to be a Corian installation and it was not, you have a right to go legal on the contractor. I bet DuPont would be glad to participate in pinning the contractor to the wall.

I doubt if your fire insurance policy will help you, unless there is at least charring of the material. I hope I am wrong.

I'm guessing that the countertop is beyond defective and into the realm of plasic 'knok-off' of corian. Corian will not crack. Never seen it and never will. Not to mention that a crock pot cracked it. My gut feeling is that the installer knows that he sold you 3rd rate counter-top and has no intention of calling you back. Sorry to say.

I agree with Robert. I have never heard of Corian cracking. The material is plastic and is very forgiving.

Your contractor should be licensed, and if he was he would be bonded as well. Through your state's licensing board you can find who the bonding company is. Contact them and explain the problem. Once the bonding company is involved you will certainly get results.

Your insurance will probably cover this. But you may have a high deductible. If it is a thousand dollar deductible you can do it your self cheaper. You can get a compound at a local hardware store you can apply you will need to buff this well but you should be able to fix it.

What our Corion installers did is;you need to get some "wood inserts",They are externally threaded and internally threaded components. You have to pre drill the hole out for them to the correct size and screw the inserts in,first. Then get the correct size bolt that screws into the insert, making sure you get the correct length!.Then screw the bracket/bolt to the insert.
