When I first got my PC it ran decent. It came with an Intel Celeron D processorand 256 MB of RAM running Windows XP Home Edition. Since then I added 1 GB of RAM to my PC. At that point, it ran perfectly smooth. I was wondering what has been causing the slow down lately. I have no clue what is up. I tried Virus-Scanning, Scanning for Spy-Ware, and Defragmenting my hard drive. I also tried removing unnecessary programs from my computer. Nothing has helped. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks a ton!

above are some good answers. Most programs we load also put themselves into the msconfig to start on Boot-up. Adobe will do this, as an example. You can go to Start > Run > (Type) msconfig > click the Startup Tab and uncheck programs you familar with that you not use a lot. They will start when you click on them. Adobe start when you click on a PDF file.
Also, I give you a link for "Process Explorer" it work a little better than Ctrl + Alt + Delete for Task Manager to see what really going on.

Install and run.. First goto startup and uncheck all items you want removed or not starting up at boot. Then goto registry cleaner and run that utility. After that do some basic cleaning on your HD and reboot. You should be good as new!!

well.. a few things could help a bit.

First, go to start-->run>> type "services.msc" and deactivate all useless services, specially one called "Indexing service". Chech the source for the link on other useless services and how/why to deactivate them.

And also look around the net for a software called "registry mechanic" it checks your system registry, evaluates and fixes all tre problems it may have (unused strings, nonexistant shortcuts, etc).

Hope it works.

Do you have tons of stuff stored on your computer in folders etc? Clear out the temporary internet files. Check in sent and trash files and clear those out. Clear out anything you don't use. Clear out emails that you don't need. see if this helps. I know dial-up is terribly slow, so I switched to broadband.

Everytime you download something on your computer it slows it down a little because you are taking up your storage. That's just how it is. I know it sucks.
