i read today in the silmarillin that gandalf and the other wizards may be lesser gods from the beginning of days. others say they come from over the Sea. anyone know more about this?

Both options are possible and equally compatible. Only JRR knew for sure which way he was going and he isn't talking.

The Wizards (Istari) came from the home of the Valar (gods) which is over the sea in the True West. The Wizards are something on the order of angels. There were five of them (Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, and two Blue Wizards) and they were sent to Middle-Earth to fight Sauron.
