I spent years trying to convince My buddy in Scotland of that very same idea. He of course felt it would be better of we became a common wealth under British rule...
I think it would be nice, but it's not going to happen.
Actually I think we should go after Poland, they love the US and every one I know from Poland says they would rather Be a Part of the US than the EU any day. Plus they have a very powerful Industrial infrastructure we could use.

I suspect that not many would be happy. Considering that 1 in 5 persons living in the US would then live in England, it might tip make some of the smaller states jittery.
It would probably upset Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as they already have a Union with England. The EU is the largest trading partner of the UK and they would not like it so it may be costly for businesses. And the comonwealth would not be best pleased.
Finally, I am not sure England would give up its monarchs so perhaps the real question id what would the US think of having a monarch and using the pound?
Sorry for not really answering your question.

1. Cultural differences would potentially be too much.
2. As someone else answered, it'd be a political disaster. Having to scrap the monarchy (which I personally kind of like) would not sit well with many of the Brits. Reworking their constitution would take about a year or so.
3. Why? There are many British that feel that the U.S. is something the world can do without and ,as someone else answered, there's 1 in 5 Americans that'd rather live in teh UK than the US. In short, we shouldn't annex Britain.
