Lord only knows why, but I always thought that it was a way of both parents having an active role or participate in choosing a name for their new child so both parents could be happy. OR, If not to torture us. Since they to had to live with their unbecoming middle name. LOL such as Concepcion! That's my middle name you can just imagine the ridicule I had to through. LOL As stated before Lord knows why ;}

Middle names are used to tell people apart. Can you imagine how many James Smith's there are or other things of that nature? With over 6 billion people in the world, we might even start giving out more middle names than just one. If they have the same first, middle, and last names, as we all know, then they are given a suffix as well (Jr., III, etc...) Again so we can tell people apart.

The concept of having a middle name evolves from mathematics. There are millions of John Doe's out there.
I've known several.
But, those with unique middle names differentiate one John Doe in an area from the other John Doe's.
That's mostly the reason for a middle name.
Sometimes middle names are the mother's maiden family name, to carry it on.

Au contraire, I know some people who use their middle names, for various reasons.
Middle names help distinguish same first and last named persons from one another.

I might be tempted to use my middle name instead of my first name if it was a good one, Heaven knows, my first name is awful. But, the middle name is just as bad.
