Filipino illustrados are the so called enlightened middle class during the spanish period. They are the ones who were educated in the Philippines or in Spain. They waged their campaign through what is called the pen and paper method meaning, they used their brains and artistic talents rather than force. The best medium that they used was the La Solidaridad, a newspaper released in Spain. This was where they aired thier view on the abuses of the Spanish officials in the Philippines. Well known illustrados who contributed to the La Solidaridad were Jose Rizal (Philippine National Hero), Graciano Lopez Jaena, and Marcelo H. Del Pilar.

Finally, the nationalistic movement catapulted to the Philippine revolution of 1896"
