The $20 trick is a time honored tradition in Las Vegas..The way it works is. At check in have the $20 visible in your hand, ask the check in clerk if an upgrade is available. He/she will say NO/I can't do that/It will cost you X amount >you can say no thanks or you can pony up the difference>Usually a lot less than if you had booked the room in the first place. Or he/she may say "let me take a look" in which case you're more than likely in luck. Only when the transaction is complete and he/she hands you the room keys do you, give him/her the $20 handshake and say thank you very much.
You have a very good chance since you're checking in on a Monday. If you get to the hotel early(noon-1pm) that would increase your chances. Most hotels say no check in until 3-4pm, but most of the time, during the week they are glad to let you check in early. It saves them a big rush & an angry mob standing in line later.
It also helps if you have some knowledge of the hotel and their room inventory >Have an idea of what you're interested in, "for an upgrade"> a view, a premium room, a jacuzzi room, etc...
http://www.harrahs.com >Bally's
These were the rates as of 3/8
Classic 4/9($69) 4/10($69) 4/11($99) 4/12($99)
Deluxe 4/9($89) 4/10($89) 4/11($119) 4/12($119)
Luxury .4/9($99) 4/10($99) 4/11($129) 4/12($129)
If you paid more than the lowest rate, call them up and tell them you want the lower rate. The rates are so low it's obvious they have a lot of empty rooms to sell. >The same is true all over LV for the early part of April> As of right now, I would say you have a great shot at an upgrade.
We go to LV 2-3 times a year for 2 weeks or more at a time, and have for over 20 years. We usually change hotels three times during a stay, sometimes four or five. It never hurts to ask, if you give them half a chance to do you a favor they are more than happy to make your day.
As a final resort, if you get to your room and aren't happy with it(the view/whatever). Place your bags in the room, don't touch anything>Check with the front desk, if it's packed, take a walk, grab a bite to eat, etc. When things die down a bit, go back to the desk and try again. Just be your sweet self and the vast majority of the time you will end up with a nice room.

No, because often the rooms are assigned by computer and the front desk person has no control.
What you can do is call the hotel and ask for the front desk manager's name and their fax number. Write a little note to this person telling them you're coming back for a special occasion, and if there's anything they can do to make the trip even more memorable, you'd REALLY appreciate it. At the very least, you'll get a fruit basket or a comped dinner. If they can upgrade the room, they will. I did this a few years ago for my mom's 50th birthday. We got a jacuzzi suite at Luxor over a holiday weekend for a midweek regular room price of $59 a night.

With over 90% occupancy rates year round.... Talk nice and smile a lot.
Tipping is an old way that USED to work... especially at Bally's...
What works is at places like Bellagio where you want a floor above 26 in order to get the private elevator and VIP services

If the front desk person is easily swayed by a $5 tip..then I'm sure they wouldn't mind dropping your rate down a bit. To tell you the truth, sometimes..all it takes is just treating them like a human being and saying Hi to them. People walk in all the time acting like their money makes them much more powerful..or better than you and try and stick their noses up at the front desk clerk not even realizing that the clerks are the ones offering the guests a service..not the other way around. Just remember..if you think you're too good for the place you're staying at..then you're probably right..and do them a favor and just leave..taking your attitude with you!

It is fairly well known secret that tipping the front desk employee is very effective for getting a better room. Upon arriving at the desk and telling him your name, shake his hand with a folded $20 bill and pass it over. He will smile and give you a suite with no questions.

The only person you tip is the bellman. If you want a better room, you have to pay for it.

There are many people who would laugh at the prospect of altering their fates. This is due to the fact that it believes that no one gets more that what is put in his destiny.

When and how you book makes a difference. Tipping at check in does not.
