Les Habitants!! Go Habs!!
They are 2 of the original six and the only ones from Canada until expansion.
My parents remember the 50's going to Maple Leaf Gardens and watching the fights and people getting carried out from getting hit by pucks.(No plexy glass)
I hope our Habs make the playoffs dude!

I am only adding to the very correct commentary which has already been posted (with the exception of Christov's rambling).
The Leafs and the Canadiens are two of the oldest, most storied frnachises in NHL history. In Canadian history, Toronto and Montreal of course have economic and political rivalry and as another responder said, the English-French rivalry back in the 1930's and 1940's was, believe it or not, much more violent then than now. When there wre only 6 teams, and the Leafs or the Canadiens were the champions (occasionally Detroit) most of the time, and they played each other 8 times a season, or some such thing, such rivalries were created.
I suppose if someone wanted to ask the baseball equivalent, one could ask why the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees are such a big rivalry. Or, in basketball, why is is there such an electric buzz when the Celtics play the Knicks (not so much anymore since both teams are not playing so well, but you get the gist).
In any case, the Leafs-Canadiens rivalry boils down to this: back in the day, you had to choose which one you liked. T.O. or Montreal. Now, perhaps that is not much the case.

Toronto and Montreal are the oldest teams in hockey. The rivalry is also natural because of the old French English thing in Canada. For a number of years the Leafs and Habs rarely played one another after realignment which made the games that more exciting. Between them they have 40 cup wins I believe. There's a lot of history in all that. I'm a Leaf fan first and foremost. I should hate the Habs but lately those Senators have been getting on my nerves way more.

Because they are both original 6 teams with a bitter rivalry, and there is only one point separating them(leafs have more and have a game in hand) for the last playoff spot. And the habs suck so the only time they get to be on hockey night in Canada is when they play the leafs. Go Leafs Go!!

lol if you ask any other team christov which team they would prefer to play against they would say the canadians cause they are a class act team.. and to the question .. its been answered..... the first 2 teams since way back in canada ... but the best rivalry was montreal and boston but its lost its edge for the past few years.. montreal had the nordiques as a rivalry also but moved to colorado since and lost its rivelry... toronto is a hated team all around and many fans love to see the canadians beat up on em.. blame it on cbc

Because they are original six teams. However, the Canadiens rivalry with the Bruins is one of the most bitter and one of the longest rivalries in NHL history.
