I was watching a game the other night between Colorado and Detroit and a goal was scored with a skater standing right in the middle of the blue area in the goal crease. The skater was to the left of the goalie while the goal was scored on a poke-in to the goalie's right. Was this rule elimanted? I remember when a skater couldnt be in this area with the goal being waved off if he was.

The rule was changed after the 1999 Stanley Cup playoffs. The reason it was changed was because a goal by Brett Hull was scored on Dominik Hasek with Hull's foot clearly in the crease. Since the game was in OT, (and was an elimination game as well) officials deemed that this goal counted. The following season, the rule was completely eliminated. Now, a player may be anywhere in the crease and may score as long as he does not interfere with the goalie and his attempt to make a save on the scoring attempt. Personally, I NEVER EVER liked the in-the-crease rule. I always felt it slowed the game down majorly, and was unnecessary. One of the few things that the league has done right recently has been that rule change.

You are correct. The old crease rule called back a goal if any part of an opposing player entered the crease prior to the puck. However, with the recent rule changes to speed up the game, the crease rule was removed. I believe that with some of the violent crashes we've seen with players driving the net and the goalies, the leaque may want to reconsider the old rule before someone really gets hurt.

The other important rule is that no player other than the goalie can cover the puck in the blue area. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it is an automatic penalty shot.

No the foot in the crease rule does not exist anymore, really the only purpose the crease serves is if the puck is dumped from before the red line and goes through the crease, then icing is waved off
