I was on verizon's website looking at the phone I want, it shows the 2 year contract price as well as the online discount. The guy at the vzw store said we can get $100 towards the purchase of a new phone. Is that $100 off the 2 year contract price or original price (w/o a contract)?

Yes, the $100 New Every Two credit is good on the any phone purchase deal, preferably on a new 2 yr agreement.
So, if you're looking at VZW's online store, the final price on getting a new phone will be the 2 yr agreement minus the following:
Online Rebate (which you may have to fill out a form to get)
$100 New Every Two credit.
If your employer has a corporate agreement w/ VZW, contact your rep and that person can offer a further discount on your phone. And you can apply both rebates to it as well, driving the cost of your new phone even further down.
