It is just a very very thin coating of 14K gold. It may wear off quickly or last a long time depending on how thick the plating is. The metal that it's coated on may be anything but quite often is brass or some other non-precious metal

My answer before I looked it up was a process to bond a base metal or silver with a coating of a precious metal- in your case 14k.

The key is price. If the item is inexpensive, you can assume that plating is unreliable- thin, few layers and not worth the money you paid for it.

The dictonary says


"Electroplating is the process of using electrical current to coat an electrically conductive object with a relatively thin layer of metal. The primary application of electroplating deposits a layer of a metal having some desired property (e.g., abrasion and wear resistance, corrosion protection, lubricity, improvement of aesthetic qualities, etc.) onto a surface lacking that property."
