Well if your serious, the link I'm providing is a list of cars that were picked as best vehicles for teens. Topping the list is the new Fusion.
But for the sake of fun, I would say a Mustang. And it's fun, reliable, but the insurance might be an issue.
By the way, your friends MonteCarlo won't be very quick when I give you some pointers on how to disable his vehicle :)

Well, if you want a sleeper than opt to get something like a dodge neon srt-4. These will blow that out without a problem, but you are looking at 6-8 grand. Just find a good condition neon on ebay or something for 1-2 grand. Get a DOHC engine and manual, put a throttle body from a auto on it (48mm vs 52mm), new poly engine mounts, under drive pulley, and a cold air intake and exhaust. For about 3-3.5 grand you could have decently fast car, 25-30mpg, and a reliable school goer. Good luck!!

If this is your first car, you don't want something fast. Trust me, as an 18 year old, I know that it will get you into trouble, sooner or later. But if you want a cheap "sporty" car, you should check out a Nissan 240sx 5 speed. Solid engine, great gas milage, sporty looks, and they have a huge aftermarket. So once you start to get comfortable with it, you can always modify it and make it faster. And stock, it'll probably tear a monte carlo to pieces, on a track with some turns....

Are you stupid? i mean seriously, who gives a damn if your car is faster than your friends, you asked for a good teen car...try um.....a 1990-1996 Honda Accord 4 door with 4cyl engine, good gas mileage, reliable. But if you feel the urge to act like a moron and go out and try to beat all the people you can, get yourself a 1971 Plymouth Baracuda Convertable with a 426 hemi, good luck...factory made that way, there were only 9 made.
