I have an electric clothes dryer that's about 18 years old. I've never had a problem with it until now. When I ran a regular-sized load of clothes through it today, I found a small pool of water about 2 inches wide under it, below the door. When I opened the door, the clothes were just as wet as they were when I first put them in there. The heating element is still working, though, because the clothes were very warm. I clean the lint trap every single time I use the dryer so I know that's not the problem. Two months ago I even moved the dryer out from the wall and cleaned the vent hose (but not the vent in the wall itself), which I do about once a year.

Any ideas? And how do I go about cleaning the vent in the wall? Can I just use the same long brush that I clean out the lint trap area with?

Thanks for your help!

Sounds like two problems. Even if your dryer isn't working I wouldn't expect to see a puddle under it as long as your washer is completing the spin cycle.

Take a look and make sure the water isn't leaking from the washer or the hoses on the back.

Sounds like the vent is clogged. You need to move the dryer out again and see if you can get the vent unclogged. They make a vent cleaning brush kit for dryers. You may want to look at the vent hose before you go out and buy the kit. Maybe the hose got kinked when you pushed the dryer back. If its only a short run of hose from the dryer to the outside vent. You may be able to clean it out without buying the kit. Good Luck!
Also check the outside vent hood. Sometimes that is where the clog is.

when you move the dryer away from the wall , turn it on and see if you have air coming out of the exhaust on the dryer itself, if so check the exhaust hose, look through it, if that is clean, go outside and check the exhaust outlet on the side of the house, take a small hangar with you to probe around and see if its clear. if anything was clogged it should fix the problem.
now if there is no air coming out of the dryer itself that means there is a clog in its air supply system where as the dryers tumbler turns air is forced through or over the heating element and inside then inside the tumbler itself that dries the clothes, unplug the dryer, take off the back panel, vacuum out all dust and build up, put everything back on and see if anything has changed. last thing, check your settings, you may be on fluff or air only. which you should probably check first.

The small pool of water suggests to me that you put soaking wet clothes in the dryer. Your washer may not have spun out all the water! Not a good thing to load your dryer with fabric that wet. Also check your lint trap under running water to see if it passes through, I know this sounds strange..but the use of dryer sheets can clog your filter with a waxy substance. Only other thing I can suggest is to check your drum to see if it spins.you may also have a broken drive belt from putting the heavy wet load in!

If your dryer is like the one I had, ( I switched to gas dryer) it has 2 heating elements ( i think, its been a while since I changed it) step 1:change your dryer vent,,, available @ big box store, hardware or appliance store.only tool needed is a screwdriver. try that before dealing with heating elements.

Sorry to take heed to your problem. this does not sound like something you will possibly prefer to handle, i be responsive to i does not. If it somewhat is a clean dryer, call the place you purchased the dryer from. Have them deliver a tech. it is going to likely be lined under guarantee. good success
