Most fertilizer is coded with 3 numbers on it. For instance a good fertilizer for having a green yard is a 30-3-3. Your nitrogen content is the 30, your phosphate content is 3, and your potassium content is 3. Nitrogen creates a green lawn, Phosphorus promotes rigorous root growth, and Potassium creates very deep drought resistant roots. Some northern states prohibit the use of any fertilizer with phosphates, due to run off into lakes and streams that can create damaging water foliage. Please check your state and local laws. Having a green lawn is not always the best indicator of a healthy lawn. The root base determines the health of your lawn. Too much nitrogen and you can burn your lawn up also. If you are in a drought prone region, you may want to use a low nitrogen high potassium and phosphorus fertilizer instead. The organic fertilizers that others talk about, have these same properties, but in less concentrated percentages. Try and find a fertilizer that has about 1% iron in it also. Learn a little more about fertilizer if you don't have much experience with it, as you can actually do harm to your lawn by fertilizing. Brand usually doesn't matter as most of them have the same ingredients in the same concentrations. Get on a 4 step fertilizer program at your local hardware store, as they will have the best knowledge of the product and when you should apply it.

A good tonic to green up your lawn can be made easily at home.
Get one of those sprayers that attach to the end of a hose and add the following ingredients to it, then apply.
Green up Tonic:
1 can of beer (cheap beer or flat beer is okay)
1 cup of ammonia
1/2 cup of liquid lawn food
1/2 cup of liquid dish soap
1/2 cup of clear corn syrup
Works great!

A fertilizer high in nitrogen, It will be the first of 3 numbers on the bag, A soil sampler to test PH is something I would recommend, If the Ph is way off, fertilizer won't help. Be warned, have your lawnmower blades sharp.
