Why do some cars have the gas tank on the left, and others on the right? Why can't they all be on one side or the other? Do they make cars like that just to confuse us?

They want to keep us on our toes. I think they have video archives of me having to back up and turn around. I miss the good old days when the put the fill behind the license plate.

For some applications, there is no right or wrong. You can flip a coin for tough decisions like which side to put the gas tank on. There is only a slight benefit of convenience for it to be on the driver's side. Some are in the back. Why not the front? Some things are traditional as well. Engines could be in the back just as well as the front.

Ironically, all my cars had it on the left side. I like this method better because I can open my drivers door, without the worry I might ding the door on the pumps or the protection poles.

But actually, the automakers do this depending on other issues related to the structure, and/or other equipment the car brings. Remember on some minivans awhile back, the placement was a concern so when you opened a rear sliding door, it wouldn't hit the gas tank cap.

But we've moved on from that...I believe...

That is a pain in the butt..... most of the time they are on the drivers side so when you get out to get gas it is on the same side. I like the older cars where it is under the license plate, like the 75 camaro I had, so you can goto either side for gas.
