You don't avoid them, it will only fan the flames. If you work for a large company file a complaint with your HR department they will have to investigate and talk to numerous employees, there is a chance the bully is the playground bully, if you get what I mean.

If you don't have a large company, call your state employment department and see what they advise in this situation.
