DaVinci Code, yes!
I can't say I've ever read a book before watching the movie (I usually watch the movie then read the book...). But I do have one example.
In the pre-teen years, one of my favorite books was called Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carson Levine. It's like a Cinderella-with-a-twist story, not all mushy, but with action and such on. The book was so good that I was very excited to hear that they were coming out with a movie. A few years pass and the movie comes out. I had past the pre-teen years by the time and waited for it to come on television before watching it and it was HORRIBLE. It was nothing like the book except they shared the same title. And I don't understand why the movie was so different because the book was exciting enough. Anyway, if I had seen the movie first I would have never read the book, so I'm glad I had been introduced to the book before the movie.

As a general rule, I ALWAYS want to read a book before I watch a movie made based on it. That way I can compare the authors' words and meanings with the screenwriters'/producers'/directors' views and additions to (or subtractions from) the plot.
For example, the movie version of A Clockwork Orange was VERY different from the book--it seemed a lot more humorous. Reading the book before, then, helped me be able to point out the differences that made it so funny and odd... which in turn helped me learn more about the director's intent, too. Without having read the book, I think the movie might not have made so much sense.
For the most part, though, when you read books beforehand, the movie barely ever lives up to your expectations... which is quite a bummer.

I still can't believe I actually wasted time reading that book.
Although I'm glad I had read all the "Lord of the Rings" books before I saw the movies. The movies did the books justice too!! That was so great...

Eragon
I liked the movie but it left out so many things that the book talked about as well as changed some things around. Such as we don't see Saphira grow up into a fully grown dragon in the movie, it just happens all the sudden. Another point would be how Arya can walk out of where the Shade kept her imprisoned, but in the book she was unconcious the whole time until she was taken to the hidden city (city names escape me right now) and healed.

I loved reading Count of Montecristo by Alexander Dumas. But the movies based on the book were so disappointing. It almost made me swear off movies based on books.
But I loved the movie Chocolat based on Joanne Harris's book of the same name. The movie was much better than the book.It smoothed out the rough edges and was more interesting.Same with LOTR.I had read the books before watching the movies, but it was so boring.I couldn't imagine how they would make a watchable movie out of that boring books.I'm happy to say that they exceeded my expectations.

To Kill A Mockingbird is my top favorite.
I've found that there are some I'm so glad I didn't read before the movie, like The 39 Steps and The Thin Man.

"The Princess Bride" by William Goldman. I haven't laughed so hard when reading a book. The film was great, too, but there's no way they could've put everything that was necessary to the storyline on screen. It would've ended up being another 20 minutes longer than "Gone With the Wind".

Needful Things - they cut so much out it wasn't even the same story
Silence of the Lambs - Clarice was so much more intelligent in the book. She solved everything on her own. In the movie they had other people helping.
and of course the Harry Potter books. The books are so much better
