I work as a housekeeper/carer in a private home for a disabled lady. After my first 6 months of employment, I attempted to leave as it was not working out. I laid down what was wrong. A compromised was met and I agreed to stay. 20 months later I wanted to leave again as the issues I raised on the first instance keep re-emerging. My plan fell through as I did not get enough funding for the business I was going to venture in.
It's now 3 yrs and I really could no longer stand being talked down all the time like I am some sort of a moroon. This was it and I agreed that I will stay until she had found someone for my replacement. How good am I? or was I just dumb? I had been collecting her prescriptions deligently every week for the last 3 years. We had a misunderstanding yesterday. She gave me a verbal warning. Is this valid as I am already leaving anyway? It's my FIRST ever in my employment history. I am 56. I have 7 days till my notice finish. What will you do?

I have been paid for last month. As it stands, I've worked 14 hrs this week. Will probably lose that if I don't turn up anymore.

I believe you can get a verbal warning. I have a friend who gave his notice recently and before it was up he got fired for damaging work equipment. Basically if you hand in your notice then you have to work for it's duration but you are still working, so things like verbal warnings, job termination and things like that still apply.

If you just have 7 days then I would just bite the proverbial bullet and work the seven days and not make too much of a fuss.

I might be wrong, but that's the way I understand it. Good luck!

It was sweet of you to offer to stay on until a new person is found. But it's sounds like you have a real stubborn one on your hands. And I bet no one is good enough in her eyes. You will probably worry about her when you leave, but you need to take care of yourself and your family as well. If that means breaking your word then you may have to do it, but I would ride out those seven days.

Legally, unless you have a contract or something, there will be no repercussions, and the cops aren't going to chase you down. And she will have to pay you for your time worked. if she dosen't you can report it to the state employment department and they will work with you to get your money.
