It's a systematic way to test the validity of ideas (theories) against real-world experience. The scientific method involves
--formulating clear, testable hypotheses,
--identifying what we will observe (facts, data, sensory experiences) if the hypotheses are correct,
--collecting and organizing the observations, and
--accepting or rejecting the hypotheses based on those observations.

There are many other ways to arrive at what we're willing to count as knowledge -- intuition, tradition, speculation, revelation, authority. All of these have their place, but if you want to arrive at knowledge which can be verified to the satisfaction of other observers, the scientific method is the choice.

Because it tells you the steps about what you do to figure out if your test thing is going to be true or not it helps you get the answer faster
