It just ground up chalk. I've actually ground it up before, it's pretty fun :)
We use it for our gripping and for other purposes. Not only do we use it on our hands but also on our feet for things like bars and beam.

The powder is mainly composed of white chalk. the chalk is extremly necessary for a gymnast, it could make a huge difference in a competition. It generally rubbed all over the hands and feet, also the legs
The chalk help fill in the gaps in the hands. It absorbs sweat, and for some reason when i use it, it helps my grip. When you are on bars or rings, there is friction between you and the bar, which causes heat. This cause the skin to rip during rough movements. This can make a gymnast not attempt to give it there best because it is painful, or even if they do, they end up with burned/ ripped hands. Something sorta like when u do the monkey bars

Okay, first thing first.
That stuff is called chalk and it helps gymnasts to not get as many rips as usual on the bar. Chalk is also used for grip. An alternative to chalk is using grips but even with them chalk helps a WHOLE lot.

it is simply chalk powder!got this info by watching CSI yesterday :) notice that when u put chalk powder on your palm u will feel sticky sensation thus increasing grip when u want to hold on something.the same thing is used in weightlifting.u don't want to use flour or corn powder because when u sweat it will become a mess!!

it's just chalk so their sweat doesn't make them fall off the bars or rings, you don't need an alternative, it works fine
