Check to make sure the speakers are connected securely. If that doesn't work go to your master volume control and make sure nothing has the "mute" box checked beside it. If those things do not correct the problem you will probably need a new sound card installed in your computer.

Look for the tiny speaker icon on the taskbar. Click once on it and you should find the speaker volume slider. Just increase the volume from there. Otherwise from "control panel", click "sound and audio devices" and click on the necessary adjustments.
Make sure you have plugged into the correct socket. Sometime it could be plugged into the "mic" socket accidently.
Try reinstalling the audio driver that came with the sound card.
Is your sound card working?
If all else fails, bring it back to the shop to get a refund or exchange. If the sales guy does not accept exchange, stuff the speaker in his mouth and you might hear the muffling of his voice thru the speaker.

Check to make sure that the sound drivers are loaded. I'm assuming you're using Windows... Go to your Start menu, then to Settings, then to Control Panel. In there is an icon for "System". Select that, then the "Hardware" tab. Then click "Device Manager".
Anything with a yellow question mark or a red X has something wrong with it and will likely need drivers. If everything is good in there, make sure your sound device is listed. If it is, and you still have no sound, make sure your speakers are working and turned on, that they're in the right plug in the back, and that the sound isn't muted and turned up to max (double-click the little speaker next to the clock).
Another thing to check, and this'll sound silly.. but if you have powered speakers, make sure either that they have power (AC or batteries) or the amp is turned off. Most speakers will work with the amp off, but if you have no power going to them and the amp is on, you won't hear a thing.

I'm guessing some drivers are not installed properly as the default sound device is the internal speaker. You might want to visit the manufacturers website and download the latest drivers.

Visit the website of the Company that made your laptop or desktop.
You should find drivers in the Support and Downloads section.
OR
Ask the person who built your computer / laptop to help you find drivers.
OR
If you built your own computer, go to the website of the Company that manufactured your sound card. You should be able to find drivers in the Support and Downloads section of their site.

If you have the installation disk for your sound card, you will have to reinstall the drivers. If you don't have the disk, then you can download the drivers from the manufacturer of your sound card.
