Straight forward answer
Core 2 Duo T5500 is better by 40 %
They have the same amount of software that they use though

The explaination
Intel and AMD have over 5 different types of architectures in all. Many of them are close to comparison when you look at buss speed to buss speed.
For example, take the Pentium 4s and AMD Athlon Opteron for an example
I currently use an AMD Opteron 165 overclocked ot 2.8ghz
nVidia rated it as a 5.04ghz
that is the speed if it was a Pentium 4 processor.
Now, Intel has come out with an entirely new architecture that they call Core 2s (includes Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme Core 2 Quad)
This architecture is supposedly 30 to 40% more efficient and faster than an AMD processor.
therefore, making Intel's Core 2 series better

Hope this helps

Both of the processors are having the same frequency, but the thing it that the processor of Intel having Core 2 Duo is of made 32 bit which is not good for future computing as the new Operating Systems are of 64 bit like Windows vista comes in 64 bit system if you have a 64 bit processor you can use both 32 and 64 bit Operating Systems but a 32 bit processor is unable to use a 64 bit system. Thus I believe that you must go for a 64 bit processor which will offer you much high processing memory and much better performance. An AMD precessor is much more powerfull than an Intel processor , AMD processors are capable of providing much better graphics and gaming perfomances and in many more fields AMD is much preferable.
I am also using an AMD processor in my laptop and its been working really good.

The GHz doesn't mean much these days. Get the Core 2, it's newer and better tech.
