There are many great bassists, as the different answers to your question testify to. The guy I look up to is Herbie Flowers. Not a famous name, at least to the general music listening public, but if you were to get together everyone else mentioned in these answers, and ask them, I bet Herbie would be mentioned by more than a few. He has been the studio bass player of choice for decades. he has worked with all the big names in the music industry. You have heard him many, many times without realising it.
have a look at:

and:

He plays an old, battered blue Fender Jazz bass. Its the only one he has ever owned, and he has never changed the strings!
And if you have never heard Sky, the band he was in with John Williams, you MUST check them out. Their version of Bach's Toccata and Fuge is the best piece of rock music ever.

PETER HOOK is the greatest bassist in the universe,
he plays with NEW ORDER, my favourite band in the universe
I spoke to him in november of last year after their gig in glasgow, got his autograph on my ticket stub, and am never gonna use the pen again!!!

Yup i agree that matt freeman is the best. How about the bass intro to "Journey to the End of the East Bay". Sweet music to my ears.

I would say John Deacon from Queen. He's the only one who really stands out to me because some of his bass lines are really original but he can also do something plain and simple really really well.
