it is possible that it could be a transmission problem, but before I jumped the gun you could pull the dip stick and smell the fluid to see if it smells burnt. Older cars wuth some wear tend to clunk into gear, maybe you might want to consider a filter ans fluid change.

Could be just the automatic transmission fluid so change it.. check by takin the dispstik and see if it has burnt smell or looks black... shuld be red...

if not, most likly its the transmission.. does it also slip gear when you accerlerate.. get it cheked out, some shops offer free check up, but of course they would start bullshiten yolu about problems that is not even related to the transmission to get $$.. so get a trusted one..

Typically that noise is in the rear axle or U-joints. A clunk or bang is a sign of slack in the driveline, that is "taken up" when you put the car in gear. This is most common on a rear wheel drive vehicle with over 100K miles. Check your U-joints or rear axle for wear.

Might want to check transmission, and/or motor mounts. These can be a cause of your complaint. Have an assistant start engine, and shift from forward to reverse while watching for excessive 'jumping' of engine, or transmission. Be carefull that you have good brakes, and that assistant USES them, also apply parking brake!
