i've had my retainer for more than half a year now, and it's still not going away. at first on the first week and the first month people kept telling me that it was going to go away after a while, once i got used to it.
but here i am, half a year with the retainer, and I still can't talk right. And I don't mean a slight lisp, or anything like that.
I can't TALK. I mean, I CAN speak, but it comes out like gibberish sometimes, unless I try really really hard.
Because of this, I'm embarassed to talk to anyone and I've sort of shut-down on myself...

my dentist told me i might have a slow tongue and that's why, but he won't do anything about it, saying i'll get used to it in a while. But it's already BEEN a while and I want my life back!

what should I do?

i am an orthodontic lab tech, which means that i make retainers. if your retainer is a hawley, with a wire, u might find relief if the doctor reduces the acrylic that is up in your mouth. it can also be cut into a horseshoe shape.this usually helps. the smaller the amount of acrylic in the maxilla, the less speech problems. best wishes
