What can I do to make sure that I understand a chapter/subject for an exam? Do I repeat what the books say in my own words?

I'm studying for a test right now, but I'm not sure if I understand everything...or prepared for my exam...

You should be able to teach someone else, if you know the subject well enough. Use your parents, and if they don't want to listen to you, teach your stuffed animals. I know how stupid that is, but really...if you know it you shouldn't have any problems. If something causes you to hesitate or think, then you probably need to work on that portion of the material. Good luck! :-)

Write some questions while you read the chapter. Then later go back and try to answer them. You could always go to your teacher before the test and ask.

first, you reread the chapter. skim if you must. Then, you see the review questions in the back and answer all of them. If you don't know all the answers, go back and find it in the chapter until you know it well.
