More of a revolutionary than leader. She helped bring awareness to the blind and deaf and provided services,
But I would not go as far as calling her a leader.

Yes i would say she was,Helen Keller was a great person who helped people realize that they could overcome their handicaps as she had. Helen Keller had the ability to help people by giving them hope that they could live a wonderful life with a disability.
On June 27 the world will celebrate the 126th anniversary of Helen Keller's birth. Deaf and blind from infancy, Helen Keller played a leading role in most of the significant political, social, and cultural movements of the 20th century. Throughout her lifetime (1880-1968) she worked unceasingly to improve the lives of people who were blind and deaf. Helen's own approach to life can be summed up by her advice to a five-year-old blind child in 1932:

"Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the face."

Yes and no. She was a great leader of the labor movement of the early twentieth century, speaking out about the horrible conditions she found in city tenements and factories. But at the same time, she also became a leader of the Socialist party in America, which is considered by many people to be strictly "unAmerican." So while she is held up as a great example of overcoming the odds and your own personal handicaps, she was actually despised by most of the American government at the time.

She was a very inspirational and important American, but she wasn't a leader. Of course, you could argue that she led by example.
