I'll be honest! If a student of the opposite sex got me an extravagant present, it would be a bit weird. Plus it could raise a few eyebrows with his admin as to why a female student is buying him gifts (sad but true). A nice card would be nice or get some friends from the class to help you make/chip in for a cake for the class to share on his birthday. My students brought cake for me one time when I had to run an extracurricular activity late on my birthday and I was very touched. Plus the cake in class idea gets you out of doing a bit of work that day! LOL
Your heart is in the right place, just don't go overboard!

How about buying him a dvd set for any historical event that changed world or history channel is selling Engineering an Empire this is very cool series they are showing how ancient world shaped their empires liek 1000 years back. So far they came up with India,Japan,China,Greece

A cool teacher would of course be greatly gratified by a student that ex-cells in their class beyond that - a card.
