I have a 1991 Chevy Caprice and after I drive for a certain limit of time the car will not turn back on after being turned off. This happened to me and my neighbor seen me in trouble so he came over and banged on the bottom of the fuel cell while I started it. It started right up but it does the same immediately after I shut it off. He told me the fuel pump is old and going out. The fuel filter was changed less than 2,000 miles ago. Is this true that I will need a new fuel pump soon or could it be the relay to the fuel pump???

Lets just say that GM has been very known for their fuel pumps going bad. and all u are doing by cycling the key is re-energizing the fuel pump & repressurizing the system. i'd test ur fuel pressure by accessing the fuel pump shrader valve (typically on the fuel rail or fuel lines.) and depressing it when you car shuts off. do this before you cycle the key. if it has pressure then it might be something else. if it doesn't have that much pressure then it is most likely the pump.

I think your probably looking at a fuel pump but a relay is a very inexpensive part compared to a fuel pump so I always say try the little inexpensive repairs before blowing your pay on a pump.

I would be replacing the fuel pump.I'm sure the problem probably gets worse in warmer conditions. When metal gets warm it tends to expand it might only be a few thou but the pump will tend to lock up and some times knocking it with a screw driver will free it up.I know this from experience as I used to help a guy many years ago with his truck round and sometimes I had to knock the pump as we going along. ( The engine was under the seat)

It does sound like the fuel pump. While you are changing the pump, take a "GOOD" like and the wiring and wiring harness. The insulation on the wires in the fuel tank on these cars tend to burn off.

MY DAD'S CHEVY BLAZER HAD THE SAME PROBLEM,,,AND THE MECHANIC FOUND OUT IT WAS A BAD WIRE IN THE PUMP,,,,HOWEVER YOU CAN STILL CHECK THE RELAY REALLY EASY BY TAKING IT OUT AND USING ANOTHER RELAY LIKE IT TO TEST IF THAT'S IT (THE RELAY IS IN THE FUSE BOX USUALLY BY THE ENGINE),,,,,BUT I THINK IT IS THE PUMP GOING BAD ;-)

If he beat on the tank and it went Whirrrr, then it is the pump....Good Neighbor. If it were the relay that is not in the tank...
