Public gets funding from the gov't (state normally). This means they usually give preference to kids applying from the state they're in. Private doesn't get special funding from the gov't.

USC is private. California doesn't subsidize the tuition like at UCLA (which is public). So, for a California resident, without any scholarships or other financial awards, it's cheaper to attend UCLA than it is to attend USC.

That's really the main difference. A giant school like UCLA offers just as much as USC does, even tho UCLA is public. It doesn't lose any prestige either.

USC has a way smaller class size which would mean more attention from the professors, but then again, UCLA is more diverse since it's public, and definitely well worth it if you are a california resident. If not, go for USC cuz the tuition's equivalent at both schools if you're from out of state.

main difference price. private is wayyy more expensive than public. I went to a private college my first year-22,498 and the campus and school as a whole was not that great (not saying that all private schools are crappy just this one). Compared to USC (south carolina) which was like 4,000 instate at the time? can you say major difference, and the campus was great and the education was excellent.

Public Colleges are subsidized by the state, private colleges aren't.

1st Do a google search, just to see if I am right.
A private college/university does not receive federal or state subsidies it relies on student tuition and private grants/donations to maintain itself.
The effect of this can be seen by the curriculum.
The standards of assessment are solely at the discretion of the institution, as well as enrollment criteria.
just do a google/yahoo search.
