See a podiatrist. I was getting them constantly and it was because I was pronating which means my feet weren't stepping correctly therefore causing excessive stress on my shins. I got shoe inserts made just for me that helped and was given special stretches for the ankle/shin area as well.

REST is the most effective treatment for Shin splints, however there are other methods. Make sure you have the proper support in your shoes. If not buy insoles or a new pair of shoes with better support. Make sure you stretch by doing ankle circling and especially putting pressure when you point downward. If you are in an important sporting event what you can do is flex your foot upward and kind of push the muscle toward the bone and tape around and under to better hold the muscle down, this may not eliminate all pain but will reduce it to some degree if done correctly.
IF YOU DO USE THE TAPE METHOD: Remember to make sure the tape is not to tight, normal movement of the ankle should not be badly impaired and if you start to feel tingling or numbness anywhere in the leg you should take the tape off and either go without or try to tape it less tight.

Hope this helps.

I went through a period of about a month where I couldn't even run a mile, I usually would run 4-5, without getting shin splints. I had just went out and bought a new pair of running shoes, which I paid $100 for, they were some new Nike shoe. Anyways, the shoes were made for someone with flat feet, I have high arches, the shoes were not allowing my feet to roll in the natural way they were accustomed to. I went and saw the foot doctor, who told me to change my shoes, I spent $60 on a new pair, and have never had shin splints again.
