Since your question is in the general-pets catagory I'm going to assume that you are referring to pet rats. I don't think it's true that rats smell like dirty leather, and I've had over 100 rats in the past 11 years.
That dirty leather smell could be the smell that a rat picks up if they are covered in their own urine? Most rat keepers, including myself, find that their female rats have a sweet smell reminiscent of grape soda, and their male rats smell like warm taco chips. Clean rats smell like this but maybe the taco odor smells like leather to that someone. I know my husband says that taco chips smell like dirty socks to him.
Rats have a natural oil in their skin. If you bathe them too often you disturb that delicate pH balance and this can lead to damaged skin. The rat will certainly smell bad if this should occur. A single rat should be a clean rat as a rat will groom itself up to 20 times a day. If you must bathe a rat try a soothing dog oatmeal shampoo.

No. I recently got my first rat, and everyone told me that it would smell up my apartment and I have a very sensitive nose, so it worried me at first. I bought her and she is actually in my room, and I can't even smell her. I use pine bedding so it absorbes the urine, and I clean the cage about every 3 days. She is an awesome pet! Let's find out - get inside your car, close all doors & windows, don't turn on the AC...sit still for about 45 seconds...now breathe -do you smell anything that resembles dirty leather???????

because sand is left to the mercy of nature and human activities, it may get contaminated. Like sand on a sea coast the position human beings throw garbage could have a diverse scent. Sand in a polluted sea could have a diverse scent etc.

not at all... i've got two pet rats and they don't smell like anything, they're actually really clean animals.

no mine smelled really good, but I bathed him often. He did have a wierd habit of urinating on his tail, so that was gross, but other than that he was as freash as a rose.
