A recent survey stated that the average person's greatest fear is having to give a speech in public. Somehow this ranked even higher than death which was third on the list. So, you're telling me that at a funeral, most people would rather be the guy in the coffin than have to stand up and give a eulogy.
-- Jerry Seinfield

How do you feel about this?

I used to have a fear of public speaking. but with practice it went away. Someone with this fear should try a toastmaster's club.

For me, it used to not be the fear of having to give a speech, but rather the fear that the speech may be lacking in quality or intelligence or spontaneity. But then one day I woke up, and realize that I had to act the way I wanted to be.

Edit- Think about it. Life would be easier if you were never born or if you were dead Plus, if you never existed or are longer in this world it really wouldn't bother you. However, life is worth living.

I love Seinfeld! I agree with the quote, but you would think people would be more afraid of death...I guess not. Personally I am not that afraid of public speaking, but I do get a little hot and nervous. Whenever I am afraid I think about what Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, "The only thing you have to fear is fear itself."

When you die, you don't have to think about or care about your performance. When you get up to speak in public you have to live with the aftermath and the criticism.

Fear is necessary to keep us safe. If we had no fear we would drive at great speeds, swim in the deepest water, talk to strangers, walk alone at night, flash our money in public.

It is also known as a gut feeling that you should go with.
