that everyone and anyone has the equal opportunity to live free and earn a living no matter what race, religion , nationality etc; that is why there use to be the image that the streets here in USA were paved with gold; hard work and the individual drive to improve your life and provide for yourself and family; it had the image of a house with a white picket fence ; car in the driveway and 2.5 children ; the ability to obtain that for your family. My great grandmother sold everything they owned in Sicily for 3rd class tickets in the bottom of boat for herself and five children, My great grandfather was here in the USA trying to provide a place to live for them; b/c of conditions on the boat , the children had to have their heads shaved for fear of lice , they came here, the government changed their names b/c it was too complicated for customs to say their Italian names. The children were separated to other families , some to work for those families - all in pursuit of the American dream, to live in peace, prosperity to grow as a family and have what they could never had obtained elsewhere, and it worked. They suffered and paid their dues for a better life.

The american dream is a stereotype that has faded in the recent past. It is living with a family of four or five, a wife, a husband, and two or three kids in a suburb and a nice house with nice money. The problems that you encounter are minor and easily over came. The wife stays at home and the dad works 9am-5pm. They eat dinner together, and shar thier problems. It is a steroetype 1950's life.

The American Dream is the belief that anyone, no matter what your race, religion, etc. was you could acomplish anything as long as you worked really hard.
Although the idea still exists today, it is becoming harder because the wealth in the US is so unbalanced. I think it something like 1% of the US has the majority of the money, i can't remember the exact percentage but it's really really high.
I remember learning about Hortio Alger, he wrote about his character, ragged dick. He wrote about a poor boy that eventully reaches success. "rags to riches"
