Jason purchased three pennants for $5.60, two sweatshirts, and 1 ball hat for $15.50. He paid the cashier $100 and received $49.90 in change. If the sweatshirts were the same price, how much was one sweatshirt?
i know the total he spent was $50.10 but when you add up the prices, it doesn't equal that, and a sweatshirts price could be any amount!

No, there is only one price the sweat shirts can be.

You know the total spent.
You know how much of that total was spent on pennants, so subtract that much from the total spent. Then subtract the price of the hat from that number. Whats left must have been spent on the 2 sweat shirts. Divide that number by 2 to find out how much 1 shirt cost.

EDIT: Sorry! Forgot to subtract the hat price the first time I had answered. I fixed it now!

You've got the first part...He has $50.10. (Because $100- $49.90 = $50.10). Now, subtract the money he spent on the pendants, $5.60. And the $15.50 spent on the hat. And he is left with $29.00 . The rest of the money was spent on the 2 shirts, which are the same price, so just divide by two. The price of one sweatshirt is $14.50 Understand? Hope that helps!

Your all wrong because your missing one little detail.

Jason purshased 2 pennants, that'll be 3(5.60) whih would total $16.80 +$15.50 for the ball hat, which is a total of $32.30.
50.10 - 32.30 = 17.80/2 = 8.90
Each sweatshit was $8.90

The ecuation for that woulb be:

2x + 15.50 + 3(5.60) = 50.10
2x + 15.50 + 16.80 = 50.10
2x = 50.10 - 15.50 - 16.80
2x = 17.80
2x/2 = 17.80/2

x = 8.90

Let x = the cost of 1 sweatshirt
Then 2x + 5.60 + 15.50 = 49.90
therefore 2x = 49.90 - (5.60 + 15.50)
2x = 49.90 - 21.10
2x = 28.80
x = 28.80 divided by 2 = 14.40

good luck
