I have a 91 chevy lumina, my problem is this: when the gas was below a quarter of a tank a whirring noise would start, well now it is doing it at a half of tank, what could be the problem?

the fuel punp is an electric one, and it is in the gas tank.
that is probably what your hearing.

i own a repair shop,and its the fuel pump going out on it,that's exactly what they sound like when they start going bad,and it will get louder on it also,but it might go all the way out,and this will leave you stranded somewhere,so be careful where you go in it,its giving you the warning right now,when you hear the sound go away ,its going to be out on it,so if i was you id get it replaced,and try not to leave a lot of gas in the tank before you take it to get it repaired,it makes the tank real hard to handle ,when it has gas in it,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

I believe you are hearing the fuel pump starting to give out. When the noise stops SO will your car. The reason you hear it with less gas because the gas is insulating the sound.

Have someone check out the fuel pump. Chevy's are notorious for leaving their unsuspecting owners stranded with that problem. I can't remember what it costs to fix it, though.
