I am pregnant with my third baby and today I had my first ob visit. The nurse kept trying to tell me I should take a birthing class. I took the class with my first pregnancy and was utterly bored. Nothing agianst the instructor but I already knew all of the stuff they were telling us. I read alot of books and watched baby special delivery every time it was on. Not to mention my husband didnt want to go. Do you think there's any reason I should take one this time around? My first labor and second labor when pretty much the same way. As long as there are no complications I plan on my third being the same also. Also has anyone ever just taken a refresher class?

I doubt you need a birthing class. I went to mine (this is my first childl) and I still knew everything they told us in class. I read a lot on sites, and I'm a paramedic student, so I had plenty of info available to me. I spent the money and felt like I had wasted it by the end of the weekend. If you feel like you have enough information and are comfortable with the birthing process then I don't see why you need to take the class.

I never took the class and i am pregnant with my second now. I, like you, read all the books, watch TLC and all those other baby channel shows and I feel completely comfortable not taking the class. Everything I have heard that you do in the class and learn in the class I feel I already know pretty well. The only thing I don't really know about are the breathing techniques... but with my first I just did my thing and I got by fine I think! Anyway, you have already taken the class, and you are working on your third. I would say you are pretty experienced and have nothing to worry about. Probably just a waste of time and money. Congrats to you though! :)

Personally, I wouldn't do it again. Actually... we're not doing it again. Our daughter was born in January, 2006 and we took classes before she was born. I found them very helpful and informative, as did my husband.

We're due again in September. We won't be taking the classes again. Why? Because we got what we needed to get out of the classes when we took them before.

Our daughter was my fourth child, but my husband's first and I'd never taken the classes before. We both learned a lot. But that's just the thing... we learned a lot... already! We won't be taking the classes with this baby and we won't take them again for any future children. We learned what we could learn in class and then we learned a ton more by just going through the labor and the delivery!

If this nurse is bugging you by telling you that you need to go through the classes again, tell her honestly... tell her you've taken the classes and had two other children. You don't believe that you need to take the classes again and you won't be taking them. If she insists on telling you to take the classes after you've spoken to her and it's bothering you, speak to the office manager. From my experiences with doctor's offices, it seems that the office manager is the person who rules the roost, so to speak. If you're having a problem with a staff member, even a doctor, I would talk to the office manager in order to get it resolved.

Good luck and congratulations!

I just had my 3rd child and there is 10 years between him and my last child. I thought about taking a class because it's been so long (I did take a class with my 1st child). I didn't need a refresher. You have your monthly OB visits to ask questions and when you go into labor, you'll remember what to do... I know I DID! :)
It doesn't hurt, but you probably don't "need" the class. Those classes are mostly for 1st time parents.

My third is due in July and I won't be taking a class. I've done this twice and I know what's coming. If your second and third are really far apart then maybe, but I'm not going to.

My insurance covered those classes during my first child, so we took advantage of it.
Boy, what a yawn fest.

They can only tell you so much. They can't prepare you for the shakes, or the ring of fire, or the vomitting.

How come nobody wants to talk about that stuff?
