I always thought the name Margot was pronounced Mar-go, but today I saw the play the Diary of Anne Frank and they pronounced it Mar-got (Anne's sister) how have you heard pronounced, is this the German way to pronounce it or something?

My grandmother was from Belgium and her name was spelled Margodt and pronounced Mar-got. Once she immigrated to Canada and then the US, her name became anglicized (westernized) to the spelling of Margot, with the pronunciation of Mar-go. She was from the Flemish speaking part of her country. I've been told she answered to either, made fierce bath tub gin and was an incredible beet farmer. No matter how I hear it pronounced, I grin. Thanks for the question and the memories.

I'm pretty sure it's Mar-go. It might be a German way to say Mar-got, but I know some French people name Margot and the French pronunciation is still mar-go.

It can be pronounced either way. Mar-go is the western pronunciation. Like the actress Margot Kidder (Louis Lane)

When we read the book in school, my teacher pronounced it
Mar-go, but then I've always read it as Mar-got, but I think it's really pronounced Mar-go not Mar-got.

I have also always said Margo too. When I saw the play I am not sure how it was pronounced. Been to long ago to remember. :) Hearing Mar-got would drive me crazy though.:)

I like Mar-go better. It flows better than Mar-got. Mar-got sounds like it should be like 2 names or something. I've heard it both ways, but like Mar-go better! Hope this helps!

I used to date a guy who bragged about having a crush on a woman named Son-ja. (J was pronounced)

Oh..the other good one that I once heard..in "Catcher In the Rye" Holden's little sister: Fee-oh-bee.
