My daughter brought home the Georgia Nicolson books in eighth grade, about a schoolgirl in England, written in the form of Georgia's diaries. The author is Louise Rennison. The 8th grade Language Arts teacher had them in the classroom library. I started reading the first book because the title made it seem like something I wouldn’t want my kid to read, and I was going to take it away from her if it was too bad. But the suspicious language turned out to be more hilarious than suggestive. It’s really pretty clean. And they might be the funniest books ever written in the English language! I embarrassed myself by reading one at the dentist's office one day! The other people in the waiting room thought I was nuts. Even the titles are funny. The first one is called "Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging." The other books are "On the Bright Side, I'm Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God," "Knocked Out by My Nunga-Nungas," "Dancing In My Nuddy Pants," "Away Laughing on a Fast Camel," "Then He Ate My Boy Entrancers," and "Startled by His Furry Shorts." I got such a kick out of them, I tell everyone about them that I can.

There's an excerpt you can read at http://www.teenreads.com/reviews/0064472272-excerpt.asp to give you an idea if you'd like the books or not.

You may like Twilight. I saw someone else recommend The Giver. There are a few other books with it - Gathering Blue and messenger (by Lois Lowry.)

Have you ever read any Gary Paulsen? He wrote Hatchet (a boy stranded in the wilderness when the pilot of the small plane has a heart attack) as well as many others.

A series you might enjoy is Uglies, Pretties and Specials by Scott Westerfeld. When you turn 16, you're given an operation to change you from an Ugly to a Pretty and your job is to have fun all the time. The main character is Tally, and when she turns 16, she's told she'll remain ugly unless she goes after a friend of hers that ran away to live in The Smoke (rebels in this society.)

Another I really enjoyed is The Green Angel, by Alice Hoffman. It's too short though - wish there was more. She also wrote a few others - Aquarmarine and Indigo that are fairly short, too - all have very interesting characters.

Alice Sebold wrote two books that are very good - The Lovely Bones (told from the point of view of a 14 year old murder victim) and Lucky, her memoir about being raped the last day of her freshman year of college. The subject matter is a bit tough, but the writing's good and the stories will touch you. They aren't in the young adult genre, but you wouldn't have any trouble with them.

Oh, and if you want some sad, try Lurlene McDaniel. I've read 3 of hers and they got me teary eyed.

Try V.C. Andrews which is written as a continuation of the main characters; the original children who are locked in an attic by their grandmother. As best I remember, there was a movie about this first book, but no others went motion-picture. The books are, I think, ones that you would be interested in reading since it starts out with two older children and two younger children struggling to escape from the grandmother's attic.
I could tell you about TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, but PLEASE read it from cover to cover. I think you will find things within the story that are still true today. Check it out at you local library and get ready for some moving, disturbing, and tragic sequences.
Happy reading. Janet

i believe someone above answered your question re: "night." as for "to kill a mockingbird," it's by harper lee and the story of a black man wrongly accused to rape and the small-town lawyer who defends him. it's told from the point of view of a young girl.

in high school i really enjoyed all mark twain books. i loved "the catcher in the rye," "the great gatsby," and i agree with the poster above who mentioned "the notebook." try just browsing around amazon. each book you look at also has a listing of other books you might enjoy.

Well if you're ok with sci fi the book "old mans war" was very good as well as it's sequel. I also recommend the Bartimeus trilogy, which kind of reminds me of a darker version of harry potter.
