In Jane Eyre, why did Mr. Rochester disguise himself as a fortune-teller?

I know he wanted to get info out of Jane, but he also didn't want anyone to know he was back at Thornfield. Why didn't he want anyone else to know?

he wanted to know what the others where saying about him.....i just finished the book this afternoon......very good :)
