The United States fueled secret wars in Central America, in the 70's and 80's, were mostly catholic CIA hired militias carried out mass executions of non-catholic peoples.
The US has been "Playing" drug warrior in South America, ever since the declaration of the war on drugs, by the Reagan administration in 1984.
This war on drugs, in effect, just took the drug trade away from smugglers and criminals, and put the cocaine and heroin industry, almost completely in the hands of the CIA. This money was used to fund illegal secret wars throughout Latin America (and now the world).
Research Iran - Contra . CIA got caught buying arms from Iran to be sent to Nicaragua. The money was known to be from drug shipments to the US. Where they subsequently arrested many Americans for having the drugs that the American government brought into the country. To this day, the CIA (with assistance from their partner Coca Cola), are still the top North American drug king pins.
They eased trading restriction with the NFTAA treaty (giving corporations power over that of all the governments that are part of the treaty).
Now they want to open the borders with a FTAA treaty.
Afghanistan = many kilo tons of heroin, and other opiates.

The Untied States has great influence in Latin America by posing as a good trading partner in exchange for military aid.

the "did" part confuses me.what time period? Currently people from latin America provide a great labor source, and send millions back to their home countries. Many more is made by the tourist industry. We have to have some friendly relations to discourage anti-American groups from creating and maintaining cells close to our border. What effects one country effects the other, I'd say currently it is an interdependant relationship.
