I've heard Metallica and Megadeth (the best thrash metal stuff in my view) and I'm starting a band (Mouth For War) and we want to be a punk thrash band. How can we balance out punk and thrash metal?

please tell me you've listened to bands like Quincy Punx (punk), or Municipal Waste (Like Quincy punx but thrash). I'd Only consider early metallica thrash and it's the same with megadeth. You should check out Amebix, DRI and early corrosion of conformity especially stuff during the whole crossover time. And for god's sake what about Anthrax.

The term "crossover" (or the more specific "crossover rock") was frequently used in the 1980s to describe a style of aggressive rock music. Bands who appreciated the fast hardcore punk stylings of bands like Minor Threat and Negative Approach, and equally appreciated the fast heavy metal stylings of Slayer and Metallica, began combining elements of both styles for a new musical style that became generally known as crossover thrash but is sometimes called punk metal. The first notable band of this style was New York City's Stormtroopers Of Death. The two hotbeds of the style were located in New York City and Southern California, home to Suicidal Tendencies. Other notable bands of the era were the Crumbsuckers, Hirax, Leeway, Cryptic Slaughter, The Cro-Mags, Method Of Destruction, and Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (aka DRI).

Well for me, (old) punk rock has a sound that it is LOUD and FAST, were strings are simple, ameturerish, or complicated.

You can make some songs that are anti-establishment, in your face, immature or violent in a way to show some punk and maybe have a raw sound, sometimes.

Another trick is to just play (do not worry) and maybe let the people put labels like punk or punk rock. Just make sure you don't call yourself pop-punk.

Mouth For War, did you got that from Pantera? Here are some bands that I reccomend to you if you wanna play punk rock, keep in mind, REAL PUNK!

Sex Pistols
The Stooges
Ramones
Dead Boys
Dead Kennedys
GG Allin
Minor Threat
Anti-Nowhere League
Black Flag
Misfits
Discharge
Killing Joke

Some stuff that Metallica covered in the album Garage Inc.
I hope this info helps you out on your punk-thrash metal
