I seem to have a thing for male characters who are somewhat broken. Not sure what that says about me... but they're always "redeemable" (which makes me feel a bit better!).
I think a balance between each of the things you described is good as well - someone who is good, but there is something there that gives them an edge. Someone who might be perfect on the outside, but flawed on the inside (or vice versa).
Since I write YA, I tend to lean more toward teen/young adult (early 20s) protagonists, but as long as the character is interesting, I'll read about just about any age!

I would rather read about someone with a skeleton in their closet. That character would probably have more to bring to the story.

I like to read about a girl who isn't perfect. She has some flaws about her, but some good characteristics too. A girl who isn't that interested in impressing everyone, but loves someone so much that they will do anything for that person.
I LOVE BELLA SWAN IN TWILIGT AND NEW MOON! SHE IS AWESOME!!(those books are by Stephenie Meyer)

The Leader. The one who assimilates on the hoof as he or she rises above the facts and myths and fear to create a bold, new vision so righteous that all others follow in rational agreement and utter relief. The explorer who never comes back. The leaper of blind faith. The basher of old fiddles who uses the wood and wire to rig a broken flux capacitor. : )

i admire characters which you're feeling which you will relate too. they don't could desire to be purely primary human beings, yet once you plan to make a hero, make specific they have flaws so as that readers don't sense that they are the appropriate person. character characteristics that i come across thrilling to learn is that in the event that they are brave sort and crafty. wish this helps!

I like characters who have some mystery in their past.Maybe amnesia, runaway princess etc. Also a character who manipulates the system to stay on top.Sort of like Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini. He didn't believe in the ideals of the French Revolution, but it didn't stop him from using it to avenge his friend's murder.Characters should be really deep.Maybe they appear ordinary on the surface but put them in a crisis and they give their best.

I like vengeful antiheros. Those guys who have some violent task they feel they need to complete and won't let anything stop them. Kind of like Scorpion from mortal kombat if you know who that is.
