you probably have an issue with the timing belt / timing belt tensioner or water pump. if the oil pump where making enough noise to hear you would also have oil pressure problems. the engine in your jetta is and interference engine meaning if the timing belt breaks or slips severe engine damage will occur. have it check as soon as possible. engine noises travel around a lot using the stethoscope you are most likely hear an echo effect from the oil casing.

i own a repair shop, and yes its possible the pump can make that noise ,but the thing of it,is it shouldn't make that loud of a noise in the engine, that you can hear it,the only time i ever really heard one doing this was at start up,after installing a new engine, and then it quietened down ,one other time was on an older model one that the pump was going out on it,and you could really hear it making a good whining noise, but it also had very low oil pressure,so if the oil pressure is good on it,i wouldn't be to concerned with it right now,but if it gets any louder ,id change it,because that's something right there that shouldn't be sounding off that much, just keep an eye on the amount of pressure it holds, and if you see it drop more than 5 pounds, id replace the pump in it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

It is possible.... I have never heard one before. I think you would have to be totally out of oil to get that noise.

usually the power steering oil pump does that when it goes bad.
check your oil pressure gauge, could be something rubbing on the flywheel
