im able to turn on the tower and the monitor but the monitor only displays a black screen.

the videocard may be bad .. or not seated well .. it could be several things ... check all the cables are plugged in then try f8 at bootup to see if it will come on in safemode ...

First, ensure the monitor is properly connected to the video card. Examine the pins on the VGA adapter on the monitor cable, its usually blue at that end, to ensure that none of the pins are damaged or broken. Further, ensure that the video card has full driver support. You can verify the driver support by opening up the device manager. If you have a yellow exclamation mark next to the graphic display, you need to reinstall the drivers for said card.

Ensure the card is properly inserted into the pci, or AGP slot.

Reboot.

You may have a bad video card. When the monitor and computer are both on unplug the monitor from the VGA port on the back of the computer. If they screen senses it has no connection and still doesn't work when you reconnect the cable your video card may have died on you. You can get them for less than 100 bucks and installation is fairly simple.

Try cleaning your monitor cable from the VGA card, then plug it again... if fails?, open your CPU then clean your VGA Card, if fails again?, this the last choice and it works always... REMOVE YOUR MEMORY CARD AND CLEAN THEM BY RUBBING A PENCIL ERASER ON THE PINS. hope it helps... please rate ny answer... thanks!
