Of course you can play chords on the bass guitar. You can play more than one string at a time, can't you? But typically no, the bass guitar does not play chords. The bass usually plays the bass line consisting of one note at a time.

The reason why bass guitar does not play chords very often is that chords sounding at a low pitch sound muddy and unclear. Chords on bass guitar will sound better in a higher register, but you can still do what you want.

Well typically, you do not use chords when playing the bass.

Of course it's completely possible to use them if you really wanted to, but it is far less practical than playing a bass the way it's intended to be played: one note at a time.

A really good bassist will be able to keep a good bassline going and change it up according to each chord change, so in that sense, knowing chords and scales is very benificial to a bass player. (although you aren't actually playing the chords, you're following along with them)

You certainly can play chords, but you don't want to overdo it. Too many chords that low will muddy things up quite a bit if you're not careful. It's like the extra strings on a 5- or 6-string...use sparingly.

No.
You play one note at a time, but you move the harmony on.
You are the root of the chord.

I'm a six-string guy myself, but I believe you use "tabs" when playing bass.
