Remove #1 sparkplug (should be front right), find socket to fit harmonic balance bolt, rotate engine crank clockwise, have someone hold their finger over the sparkplug hole, rotate engine crank until air pushes finger off, use screwdriver to feel for top of piston in sparkplug hole, look at timing degrees on harmonic balance pulley, mark on pulley should match up with the zero mark on the timing plate, take distributer cap off, metal piece on button (diode) should be facing between #1 & #2 sparkplugs, check vacuum line to distributer if vacuum advanced, If vacuum line-disconnect to set time, adjust timing in drive to your left is slow engine down (retard), & to the right is speed engine up (advance), adjust to engine running freely (not dragging or overrevving), (should hear it), hook vacuum advance back up, gun the engine while holding brake, tap gas & vehicle should take off w/out hesitation, if hesitation-needs some fine tuning.

You'll need a timing light if you dont have one buy one or have a smog shop do it. Ok on the front of the motor there should be a Harmonic Balancer. When the motor running when the timing light shines on the harmonic balancer you should see numbers check your manual on what to set it too, then losen the bolt holding the Distributer in place then rotate the distributer till the number lines up with the indicator. It may take a while to get it right on time this will help the motor run cleaner and sometimes better. It may be different on a Ford because ive only done timing on chevys so im not sure its the same.

First off, why is it out of time, and are you sure that it only needs to be set? Had problems in the past with 2.9 ford rangers(two of them) it seems the shaft came loose at the reluctor plate. (inside, under the distributer cap) The first time it happened to me I timed that sucker three times, it NEVER make it two miles before it 'jumped' time again, drove me NUTS untill I accidently found the problem. That will not make me look like a fool ever again, let me tell you! Take the distributor out, hold reluctor and try to turn distributor shaft, if it will turn look closely, and you will see the problem. Hope this helps.
