Ok, here's the deal... I just moved into a new apartment and for the first time in my life I do not have a dishwasher. So I am having to wash everything by hand. But for some reason, my glasses smell funny after they've been cleaned and dried! I don't get it... I wash them first since glasses tend to be the least dirty when it comes to dishes, so the water they're in is clean and super hot. I let them soak in water hotter than I can stand it (as hot as it gets) for at least 10 minutes before washing, I use lots of soap, rinse with hot water... but they still have this smell to them. It's not horrible, but it kind of makes you think twice about how clean the glass is if you smell it when drinking from it. I'd hate to have guests over drinking from my glasses and that thought run through their mind. Does anyone know how to get rid of this problem? Something I can add to the water? Thanks!

If you are drying them by placing them upside down on a towel or in a draining board, the smell may be coming from there. I do not have a dishwasher, and have noticed that if I do not change the towel daily, or wash the drain board frequently, the glasses pick up the smell. They are clean so don't worry, but it is very uncomfortable to serve drinks to guests in glasses that do not smell appropriately. If this is not the problem, then it may be that the soap you are using is not a good quality, or that they are picking up the odor of all the intermingled dishes with them in the sink. I don't soak the glasses at all. I put soap in them, and use a sponge to clean them inside and out and rinse each one of them thoroughly. It takes more time, but I have not had a smelly glass since I started doing it that way. Good Luck, hope this helped.

I have a feeling that you're probably obsessing over the smell because you're trying hard to smell it - I doubt that anyone would notice!
Nevertheless, you could try to locate the source of the smell. Are your cupboards musty? Is it your dishwashing liquid?
Try changing brands of liquid. Make sure you airdry them. I rinse everything in the hottest tap water so that my dishes dry quickly and streak-free. You could also try adding a spoonfull of bicarbonate of soda to your washing water which has odour eating properties. I actually buy a baking soda infused washing up liquid and find it works a treat!

It might be the sponge, or wash clothe you are using to clean them with. If not try adding a capful of bleach to the dish water.

My boyfriend has the same problem. His is because he uses a sponge to wash them. So I guess I would ask are you using a sponge to wash them or a cloth? If it is a sponge throw it out and switch to a cloth, and if it is a cloth use a clean one everytime you do dishes. Hope this helps. :)

It could be a residue that is left behind by the detergent, or even the sponge you are using. I would get a new sponge and see if that takes it away, if not, try changing the soap you are using.

You did everything I did in the same situation. My suggestion? I bought a counter sitting dishwasher. It sits right on top of the counter and cleans up to 4 place settings. It costs about $100 to $200 depending on brand.
Easy hook up, straight to your kitchen faucet.
Good luck Hon.

It may be the water. There may be some chemical in there that cause the smell. You could try buying a water purifier and see if the helps. Also try using colder water maybe.

Yes, add a tablespoon of bleach to your rinse water, then rinse them a second time with just plain hot water...the smell will disapate.
